Local Adventure Map
Over the past five years and numerous expeditions, we have logged many animal sightings and points of interest in our local area. This has enabled us to compile our detailed 'Local Adventure' map. You will use your own transportation to sight, observe and explore as much or as little as you like. The map shows the suitability for cars, 4x4s, ATVs, horse, foot and bicycle. Moose, Elk, Caribou, Wolves, Bobcat, Cougar, White Tail Deer, Coyote, Fox, Mountain Goat, Porcupine, Wolverine, Black Bears and Grizzly Bears are just some of the wildlife we have seen in our neighbourhood, along with over a hundred different species of birds and raptors. The map contains information on many of the "local best kept secrets", including beaches, waterfalls, viewpoints, trails for all types of activities, fishing spots, ancient cedar trees, as well as several current bear 'Hot Spots'. On the reverse, you will find guidelines and tips on animal identification, best time of day to sight, safety, sustainability and photography.
We have spent time watching the Bears that frequent our local area. Bears, to some degree, are creatures of habit, and often return to feed at the same spots time after time, year after year. However there are no guarantees that they will always been there (or be there at all) as there are too many other external factors that may affect sightings, from hunting to winter severity, food availability to territory disputes and habitat use. However, in the spring season of 2010 (our first bear sighting was in mid April and our last bear sighting was in late July) we had an 80%+ sighting success rate. The highest number of sightings in a day was eight; with our personal best being six sightings in one day - two adult black bears, three black bear cubs, and a young adult grizzly. The spring season daily average for bear sightings this year was an impressive 2.3 per day. The spring season runs from mid April to mid July, with the shorter fall season running from late August to early October. The best months to sight and observe the bears are May and June, and in the fall in late September/ early October.
The Local Adventure map is not for sale, it is available free to all guests with three or more nights cabin rental.
